The European Society for Evolutionary Biology has established The John Maynard Smith Prize to be awarded every two years to an outstanding researcher in the field of evolutionary biology. The award is open to a world-wide competition. The recipient of this Prize delivers the John Maynard Smith Lecture at the Evolution Congress.


The assessment committee of The European Society for Evolutionary Biology has unanimously decided to give the John Maynard Smith Prize 2001 to Dr. Alexander Badyaev of Auburn University, USA.
